Chattanooga Bicycle Facilities Master Plan

Why should the Chattanooga Urban Area include bicycling as part of the comprehensive transportation plan? Because Chattanooga, like many other cities across the country is facing increased healthcare cost, air pollution, traffic congestion, and economic competition. Bicycling deserves a second look because it is a convenient pollution-free mode of transportation that addresses the above issues.

The Chattanooga Urban Area Bicycle Facilities Master Plan, presented on April 2002 at a public meeting, builds upon the 140 miles of existing and previously planned greenways within the planning area. The plan identifies 382 miles of additional facilities that are comprised of the following:

  • 40 miles of Class I - Multi-use Paths
  • 154 miles of Class II- Bike Lanes (separated lane 4-6 ft. wide immediately adjacent to vehicular travel lane)
  • 188 miles of Class III - Bike Routes (a wide outside lane to accommodate both vehicles and bicycles)

The planning horizon for this plan is twenty years. The plan addresses engineering, education, encouragement, and enforcement. These aspects of bike plans, often referred to as the "Four Es," are essential to the successful implementation of the plan.

Mayor Bob Corker of Chattanooga included the implementation of the first phase of the plan in his State of the City address (Chattanooga Times Free Press: Sunday, May 26) and is fully behind this master plan. He has committed the City of Chattanooga to complete Phase 1 of the plan by Fall, 2002!

Phase 1 includes 24 miles of bike lanes and 38 miles of bike routes!

We can influence the leaders of other municipalities and counties in our area to approve the plan. When the plan is in place, our metro area will be primed to receive substantial federal funding for bike facilities such as bike routes and lanes, greenway trails, bike racks on CARTA buses, and more.

A map with the areas covered indicated by different colored background is available on the Regional Planning Agency web site – www.chcrpa.org. Click on Bicycle Facilities Master Plan, then click on ‘map’. There is also the inventory of all the sections of roads looked at during the study and how they were rated. And, while you are there, back on the main page is a button for the 2002 Bike It and Like It Program.

Click here to view Phase 1 of the master plan. You can view it here and/or save it on your computer. You can also download the Total Bicycle Master Plan. It is very large and requires Adobe Reader to view.
