Most motorists are considerate of bikers
By Eddie Rahm
Recently, numerous letters to the editor have appeared by bicycle
riders extolling their legal rights to the road (correct), some of which were rather
critical of the general driving public.
I started road biking in May with the intent of getting my out-of-shape
50-year-old body back into reasonable condition. I am not what you would call a
"hardcore rider" but rather a "recreational rider" trying to improve
my health.
As a biker, I would like to take this opportunity to express my
appreciation to the 99 percent of drivers I have found to be very courteous and
considerate. However, I will have to admit to having seen some thoughtless drivers, and
believe me, it is scary when you encounter a close, fast-moving vehicle. On the other
hand, I have seen similarly thoughtless bikers claiming the right of the road, but not
always the responsibilities.
Most of the drivers I have encountered slow down and move over to allow
a safe clearance between their car and the biker. One thing that concerns me is the cars
that will move over for the biker but into the path of oncoming cars, rather than waiting
to pass. Bikers don't want to see drivers injured either (so be careful).
Please allow me to say a heartfelt "thank you" from bikers
to these considerate drivers. You are appreciated!
While I have the opportunity, I would also like to thank Mayor Kinsey
and other local officials who are making an attempt to help Chattanooga catch up with
other southern cities in relation to alternate transportation. There are many people like
me who would enjoy riding bikes to work, if only we had safe corridors on which to
traverse.
Finally, I would like to encourage anyone who may think they are out of
control (bodywise) to consider bicycling, it's a great means for weight loss and muscle
toning. Now, get out there and bike!
