2004 Sequatchie Valley T-shirt

A Very Special T-shirt
(For those of you who missed the label
on the Sequatchie Valley ride packet)
Chattanooga Bicycle Club welcomes you to the Sequatchie Valley Century 2004
where you'll ride through some of the most compelling natural beauty that this
historic area of Tennessee has to offer.
Artifacts substantiate Sequatchie Valley's earliest inhabitants were Native
American Indians. While Sequatchie Valley was established in 1857, historians
put Hernando DeSoto and his party in the area circa 1540.
The valley was named for the Cherokee Chief Sequachee. Speculation exists as to
the meaning of this name.-- The general consensus by historians studying the
Cherokk who originally inhabited the area, is "opossum, he grins".
Your commemorative t-shirt pays homage to the roots of the region. The three
icons represent (L to R): 1. Native American symbols for "big mountain" and
"running water". 2. American Indian pottery stamp which represents the state of
Tennessee, and lastly, 3. for your present-day experience--a modernist graphic
to represent the wheel of a bicycle.
Enjoy! Ride safely.
A huge thanks to Ellen Cook for the wonderful design and
history!
