The challenge will be a a fun-for-all bicycle
(and skate) based scavenger hunt tha
t
will begin at the Tremont Street turnaround sculpture and end at an undisclosed destination in downtown Chattanooga.
Along the way cyclists will be visiting less well-known attractions and hidden
treasures of downtown Chattanooga. At each location there will be clues,
puzzles, and mental mysteries to engage and entertain while you enjoy a fun 2-3
hours discovering Chattanooga's
less touristed side.
When someone thinks of Chattanooga's attractions, you immediately think of Rock City, Ruby Falls, the Tennessee Aquarium, The Chattanooga Choo Choo and the many other well advertised tourist attractions around town. But what about the ____ and the ____? Some of our most attractive and interesting places and structures are not the ones you read about in the vacation guides. In order to introduce our local folks, who don't get downtown all that often or who just want to have a really fun time, Mike Pollack of RedPoint Management, a corporate motivational company, is putting together the ‘Chattanooga Off-the-Map' Downtown City Search. This year's theme will be PUBLIC ART so be thinking of what is where around downtown Chattanooga.
Teams of three or four riders of all abilities on any
type of bike or in-line skates will follow a trail of clues to various
off-the-map sites within the downtown area. A few of the more well known sites
may be mixed in as well, but everyone may find a place they never knew
existed. Once you find one site, you look for clues to the
next site. It may be a puzzle, a riddle, a task, or who knows what. Its up to the
team to figure it out.
In some of the past scavenger hunts, it has been pointed out that we have gotten so carried away with the excitement of the hunt, that we have not been very considerate of others who happen to be in the downtown area at the same time. We have been know to run lights and stop signs, ride on sidewalks and the wrong side of the road, cut across lots, scare pedestrians. Whoa! We are supposed to be ambassadors for cycling in Chattanooga. What kind of impression are we making? So this year we are adding an etiquette patrol who will not actually participate in the hunt but will watch the teams as they hunt. They will award plus and minus points according to how well the members of a team interact with the city. Pointers will be given as to what is ok and what is a no no. Folks, this is not a race. It is a fun event and it is sooo much fun. But we have to remember that we are not the only ones in downtown Chattanooga on this Sunday afternoon. So lets see how many of the folks walking around downtown will see us and want to join us next year.
If you don’t have a team, don’t worry. We will
match yo
u
up to one. Just show up at the sculpture at the Tremont Street turnaround near
the Theater Center in Coolidge Park well before 2:00 on
Sunday, October 30. You will leave from there at 2:00
and end at — who knows where. There will be some prizes, some discoveries, and a
guaranteed good time for all.
This event is free and open to all with a bike or in-line skates and a helmet. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. This is part of the Bicycle Friendly Week program.
See you there
