Trail Description: A combination of single track, double track and badly rutted jeep road
makes for fun for the expert and beginner alike. Taking the jeep road to Mushroom adds
some more fun. There is a hiking only trail around the rim of the mountain to Mushroom
Rock. Bikes are not legal on this trail.
Location:
Prentice Cooper Wildlife Area on Signal Mountain
Highlights: The
view from Edward's Point is spectacular - looking down on the Tennessee River Gorge and
across to Elder Mountain. Mushroom Rock is a neat rock formation with a fun ride to it.
Directions: To
get to the trail head from Chattanooga: From I-27 (Corridor J) north, take the Signal Mtn
exit and continue up Signal Mtn. Take a sharp left turn at the top of the mountain just
before the traffic light. Follow this road around until you come to a 5-way
intersection near a golf course. Turn left on Timberlinks. Continue on Timberlinks over a new bridge. At the top of the hill past the new bridge
look for some power lines. The main trail head is on the left just before the power lines.
Park on the side of the road here. Or continue a little farther. The main road (now Shackleford
Ridge) curves to the right and the road to the left is Edward's Point Rd. Turn
left here and look for an old jeep road on the left. This leads to Edwards
Point.
Please note: The old school/hunt
club where many of us have parked in the past is off-limits now. Please do not
park there.
